Stomach Surgery

Millions of people struggle with being overweight or obese and resort to all kinds of diets, pills and weight loss plans to achieve their goal weight. Since many people are unsuccessful at developing the will power to stick to certain programs or exercise routines, they often consider bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery is a procedure that is performed on obese people to assist them in their weight loss goals. In order to reduce the amount of food that a person consumes, the stomach is reduced in size or restricted. There are wide variety of procedures to choose from, but each surgery is an attempt to reduce either the size of the stomach or remove impurities from the digestive system.

There are several different types of bariatric surgeries with different adaptations. The Gastroplaty may be performed in several different ways and each manner has its own name. For example, there is the Vertical Banded Gastroplaty, Silastic Ring Gastroplaty and the Adjustible Ring Gastroplaty. All of these procedures are very similar and focus on restricting the patient’s intake of food. Patients will have to chew and swallow their food slowly and carefully after the procedure is done.

Another bariatric surgery that is often done is called the Gastric Bypass. Two types that are offered are the Roux-en-Y and the Divided Gastric Bypass. These two procedures rate as the most highly effective weight loss surgeries across the board. The size of the stomach is reduced with this surgery. Post-surgery, patients are unable to consume large quantities of food at one time. The dramatic reduction in the size of stomach creates the feeling of fullness much earlier than previously experienced. By eating smaller portions weight is reduced. Part of the stomach is actually closed off so that not all calories are absorbed and stored in the body.

A third type of bariatric surgery is called the Biliopancreatic Diversion. In this surgery, a portion of the stomach is actually removed and the rest of the stomach is connected to the lower part of the small intestine. Another version of this surgery includes a duodenal switch. The Biliopancreatic Diversion with duodenal switch is a procedure that removes a smaller part of the stomach and connects the remainder to the duodenum, which is connected to the upper small intestine.
