Are The Bariatric Surgery Risks Worth The Trouble?

Obese people live a life of adjustment. They are unable to do anything they want because their weight stands in the way as an unmovable obstacle. They cannot get a regular job because people doubt their ability to deliver; they cannot exercise as much as it would be necessary because they are unable to; they cannot make friends because they are always conscious about their size and looks and so on.
In other words the obsess people live in almost total isolation or self-imposed exile even if they live in the most crowded of cities. No wonder that these people are usually suffering from low self-esteem, depression, and other such afflictions that stem from loneliness and inability to socialize.

Bariatic Surgery As A Life Saving Device

For these people bariatric surgery risks is a very small price to pay. The path to normalcy is usually obstructed by the limited choices of weight loss programs available to people with BMI (Body Mass Index) 40 and above. Most of the surgical interventions are denied to them for fear of further complications. The bariatric surgery usually helps them enter into the category of eligible people for other more complex and effective weight loss medical interventions.

Hence, for many bariatric surgery risks are tolerable because this surgery opens for them a path that was before this closed forever -- the path to regaining normalcy in weight and their life in general.

What Are The Major Bariatric Surgery Risks?

The good news here is that the bariatric surgery risks are not major. Most of the bariatric surgery risks are minor and reversible ones such as skin dryness, mild pain, hair loss, dietary intolerance, anemia, vitamin deficiency, nausea and vomiting and gall stones. These bariatric surgery risks may or not manifest themselves to all patients. The side effects described would very much depend on the body and its resistance power as well as the mental make-up of the patient.

This does not mean there are no major bariatric surgery risks. There are but these are far and in between. Some of the major bariatric surgery risks encountered are leakage of stomach acids, blood clots, hernia, infection, bowel obstruction and so on. These problems are usually rectified through further surgery. It is important to note that such major bariatric surgery risks occur in less than 1% of the cases.

It is good for the patient to educate himself/ herself thoroughly on the procedure of bariatric surgery before hand and ensure that they are well aware of all the possible bariatric surgery risks involved.
