Two Types Of The Gastric Bypass Procedure

When a person has been obese for most of their life and they are unable to lose this weight through conventional means, gastric bypass surgery might be something that can help them.  Having a gastric bypass procedure is not something that everybody should consider because of the fact that it is a major surgery.  Many people who have had difficulty eating have been able to curb their eating habits through hard work and psychiatric help.  If you have gone through all of the necessary steps and still are unable to lose weight then a gastric bypass procedure might be prescribed by your doctor.  There are, however, several different types of gastric bypasses that you could have.

The first type of gastric bypass procedure that were going to talk about is one that alters the stomach so that you can not eat as much food.  This is done by either stapling the stomach or through a use of the band in order to make the usable part of the stomach much smaller.  The part of the stomach that is left to use is typically in the area towards the esophagus.  The lower part of the stomach is left unused altogether.  The intestinal tract will be rerouted to the new area of the stomach.  This can have several different effects.  Not only will you be able to eat less whenever you are sitting down to a meal, the food may also go through your system undigested to a certain extent which would mean you're absorbing less calories.  In turn, you would also be absorbing less nutrients which means that you would have to stay on a strict gastric bypass diet in order to stay healthy.

The second type of gastric bypass procedure does not involve shrinking the stomach at all.  What it does involve, however, is altering the digestive tract in such a way that food passes through it without being absorbed into the system.  If food is not being absorb by the digestive tract, the calories that are in the food are also passing through your system untouched.  A person with this type of gastric bypass procedure may be able to eat normal amounts of food but they will have less calories realized from that food because of their altered digestive tract.  As is the case with the other type of gastric bypass procedure, those that have an altered digestive track will also need to be on a specialized diet.

Even after a gastric bypass procedure, it is still possible for the patient to gain back the weight that they had lost.  That is the reason why most people that go through this type of surgery have psychiatric evaluations on a regular basis until they are able to identify why they were overeating in the first place.  With help from a psychiatrist and also through a gastric bypass procedure, you may be able to continue on a lifestyle that will leave you healthy for the rest of your life.
