A Guide To Lap Band Bariatric Surgery

Lap band Bariatric surgery is a minimally invasive form of weight loss surgery that is reversible and adjustable according to the needs of each particular patient. Surgery is done with a laparoscopic approach, hastening healing and recovery time and reducing trauma to the body. Unlike other types of gastric surgery, no surgical staples are used in the stomach, and no intestinal rerouting is necessary.
For the person who has tried a wide variety of weight loss regimens to no avail, seeing limited results or regaining lost weight over time, lap band Bariatric surgery may be the best option. This procedure uses very small incisions, speeding recovery time and reducing the potential of surgical complications. While any surgical procedure carries certain risks, often the severe health effects of obesity are much more of a danger than any potential weight loss surgery risks.

The reliability and relative ease of lap band Bariatric surgery makes it a good option for those that are suffering from chronic obesity, capable of promoting successful weight loss where many other techniques have fallen short of that goal. Often, the health problems that result from excessive weight can be improved, or even reversed in some cases with a combination of lap band Bariatric surgery, nutrition counseling, and regular exercise.

Lap band Bariatric surgery uses a silicone device called a gastric band to reduce the size of the stomach, limiting food intake. The digestive process is significantly slowed to ensure that the patient feels full and satisfied with less food consumption. This gastric ring contains saline, making it easy to adjust the storage capacity of the stomach by adding or removing the liquid.

A stoma is placed just under the abdominal skin for access to the gastric ring after the procedure is completed, making continuing adjustment possible. If the patient is losing weight too quickly, saline can be removed to loosen the ring and allow greater food capacity in the stomach. Should weight loss be slower than it should be, the ring can be tightened with an addition of saline to restrict food intake further.

The unique adjustability of the procedure makes lap band Bariatric surgery a flexible option well suited to the needs of a wide variety of patients. With this minimally invasive surgical procedure to aid in weight loss, good nutritional planning, and regular exercise, those that suffer from severe obesity can soon be on the road to a healthy, active lifestyle.
